Abstract

Straipsnyje apžvelgiama chirurgijos raida nepriklausomoje Lietuvoje 1919–1940 metais. Pateikiami duomenys apie pirmuosius žingsnius organizuojant ir kuriant chirurgijos discipliną Aukštuosiuose kursuose ir vėlesnį jos vystymąsi universiteto Medicinos fakultete Kaune. Aprašoma iškiliausių to laikotarpio chirurgų J. Žemgulio, J. Dzirnės, H. Boito, A. Hagentorno, V. Kanaukos, V. Kuzmos, A. Maciūno, J. Čeponio, J. Jaržemsko ir kt. veikla kuriant praktinę ir akademinę chirurgiją Kaune ir Lietuvoje, aptariamas jų indėlis į mokslą, Lietuvos chirurgų draugijos organizavimą, pirmojo periodinio lietuviško žurnalo „Medicina“ steigimą. Pateikiami svarbesni faktai apie šių iškilių asmenybių visuomeninę veiklą, jų tragiškus likimus istorijos posūkiuose.

Surgeons and academic surgery in Kaunas between 1919–1940

This article offers an historical overview of the development of surgery in Lithuania during the years of independence between 1919 and 1940. It describes the first steps of the creation of academic surgery and it‘s later development in the Universtity in Kaunas. The paper depicts facts about the prominent surgeons of that period – J. Žemgulys, J. Dzirnė, H. Boit, A. Hagentorn, V. Kanauka, A. Maciūnas, J. Čeponis, J. Jaržemskas and others who achieved major developments of practical and academic surgery, scientific works, organization of the Lithuanian Society of Surgeons and establishment of the first Lithuanian periodic medical journal „Medicina“. Some interesting facts about the public and social roles of those prominent personalities and the tragedy many of them lived at this turn of history are also presented.
