The data of written (documentary, narrative, cartographic) and archaeological sources are considered concerning nine objects: The Bathhouse of Vytautas (1, 2, 3), the Wade of Vytautas, the Bridge of Vytautas, the Hillfort of Vytautas, Vytautas’s Tower, Vitovka and Lake Vidovo. The author has come to the conclusion that all the names are mentioned in the later sources. The results of the article may be interesting to all who study the activity of Vytautas as well as to scholars dealing with the historical geography of the Northern Black Sea Region.</p> Ольга Белецкая ##submission.copyrightStatement## Fri, 28 Dec 2018 00:00:00 +0200 The Connections between the Basilian Order and Vilnius University <p>[full article and abstract in Lithuanian; abstract in English]</p> <p>Vilnius University has been the preeminent high school of The Grand Duchy of Lithuania for several centuries, spreading its influence across different areas of public life – religion, politics, culture. This article analyzes the influence of the Vilnius Alma Mater on the development of the Order of Saint Basil the Great (which had operated between 1617–1839). To that end, three aspects, revealing the connections of the two establishments, are distinguished: Basilians as university students, Basilians as university professors, and Basilians as university partners in the field of education. The research indicates that over a hundred young Basilians were studying in Vilnius University between 1617 and 1832. The members of the Basilian Order constituted a significant group of monk students from the mid-18th to the early 19th centuries. Cooperation in administering secondary schools yielded mutual benefits for both Vilnius University, which supervised the Vilnius educational district in 1803–1832, and the Basilian Order. The Order secured maintenance and provided support for a certain part of the Vilnius educational district schools, while the University became the protector and representative of the Order’s interests in Russian governmental institutions. Dielininkaitis, who received his doctoral degree in sociology at Paris University in 1933, acted as a transmitter of Catholic social theory in Lithuania. In 1934, he participated in the summer school on Catholic state theory in Switzerland. Later on, Dielininkaitis drew on his Swiss influences and used the existing framework of Catholic sociology to develop and promote his own concept of corporatism. Like many other Catholic social theorists, Dielininkaitis saw corporatism as a “third way” between capitalist and socialist economic systems. Interestingly, Dielininkaitis limited Catholic corporatism to social and economic spheres and separated it from political implications. However, in his considerations on the political crisis in France, Dielininkaitis maintained that the political form is an expression of social life. Therefore, his separation of &nbsp;corporatism from the political sphere still remained problematic on a theoretical level; the perceived connection between political order and social life implied that Dielininkaitis’s concept of social and economic corporatism was open to a redefinition into a political project.</p> Vilius Kubekas ##submission.copyrightStatement## Fri, 28 Dec 2018 00:00:00 +0200 The Domestic Services Center as an Element of Household Modernisation is Soviet Lithuania <p>[full article and abstract in Lithuanian; abstract in English]</p> <p>The domestic services center was a new type of building created in USSR in the late 1950s. The USSR Communist party and its new party program, adopted in 1961, were the main influences of creating this new function building. The goals set in this program were the following ones: to provide Soviet citizens with domestic, cultural and social welfare and to release women from domestic concerns. To achieve these goals, the USSR Communist party was running a mass housing campaign and creating a tiered system of the adaptation of public cultural and consumer services in living areas – the so-called mikrorayons. One of the most important elements of the system was the domestic services center. It was designated for all cities in Soviet Lithuania to have a main domestic services center. The functions performed by it were to take care of the accessibility of household services to all residents in the district. Also, the domestic services center was a building that offered the highest amount of household services. In order to fulfill people’s daily needs and expand the network of consumer services, domestic services centers constantly experimented with the assortment of certain services. To attract more clients, the Ministry of Consumer Services made big efforts to create a unified visualization of consumer service facilities. Moving to the architectural part,&nbsp; all buildings of the tiered system of public cultural and consumer services had to be built according to standardized designs in the early period of the mass housing program. But later, in the 1970s and 1980s, they were replaced by individual designs. However, the domestic services center often used to be incorporated in the center of a mikrorayon. It had to house all the facilities residents might need on a daily basis. Individual designs of domestic services center might have architectural value, but urban value is also important.
