Call for papers for a special issue ‘Old Age and Active Ageing in the Context of Social Policy and Social Work’ of the journal Social Theory, Empirics, Policy and Practice (STEPP)

Population ageing raises many fundamental questions, and concerns, as well as new opportunities for ageing societies. Active ageing can be defined as the process of optimizing opportunities for health, participation and security in order to enhance the quality of life as people age. Rapid ageing is challenging in three of four Active Ageing Index dimensions: participation in society; independent, healthy and secure living; capacity and enabling environment for active ageing. Therefore, it is particularly relevant to study ageing processes and experiences with a focus on social policies and social work practices that promote and facilitate active ageing in various social, economic, and political contexts.

In order to initiate a broader interdisciplinary academic discussion on the issue of active ageing, we invite scientists and practitioners in different fields (psychology, sociology, social work, social policy, economics, healthcare, etc.) to submit papers for a special issue on active ageing of the journal Social Theory, Empirics, Policy and Practice (STEPP).

The topics include but are not limited to:

  • obstacles for older persons to stay at work or get employed, and what state interventions could be effective in this area;
  • aspects of loneliness, social activity, family relations in old age, and generational solidarity;
  • long-term care, nursing, healthcare needs of older persons and sustainability of care systems;
  • social guarantees provided by the state, individual savings and property;
  • aspects of subjective well-being, social relations, learning and use of information technologies;
  • silver economy.

The scientific journal Social Theory, Empirics, Policy and Practice (STEPP) is the first scientific journal about social work and social policy in post-communist Lithuania. This original, peer-reviewed, diamond open-access journal publishes scientific articles about relevant social work and social policy issues since 2001. The journal accepts articles in Lithuanian and English. There are no article processing or submission fees and the articles are published on an ongoing basis guaranteeing a quick publication process.

Abstracts of the papers (300-500 words) should be submitted by the end of July 2023 to Editor-in-Chief Eugenijus Dunajevas (eugenijus.dunajevas@fsf.vu.lt) and to Deputy Editor-in-Chief Jūratė Charenkova (jurate.charenkova@fsf.vu.lt). If selected, full papers should be submitted by the end of September 2023. For more information and author guidelines see: https://www.journals.vu.lt/STEPP/about/submissions.

If you have any questions regarding the submission or the scope of this special issue, feel free to contact Journal’s Deputy Editor-in-Chief Jūratė Charenkova.
