Straipsnyje nagrinėjami XIX a. pradžios britų keliautojo ir gydytojo Roberto Lee (1793–1877) skaitymo įpročiai. Remiantis duomenimis iš nežinomo Lee rankraštinio kelionės dienoraščio, parašyto 1824–1826 m. kelionės į Rusijos imperiją ir gyvenimo joje metu, kai jis dirbo šeimos gydytoju grafo M. S. Voroncovo namuose, straipsnyje atkuriamas jo skaitinių sąrašas ir aptariamos aplinkybės, kuriomis vyko jo skaitymas. Straipsnyje atskleidžiama, kad didžiąją dalį knygų jis skaitė keturiose vietose: Bila Cerkvoje, Odesoje, Kryme ir Mošnyje, kur Lee, greičiausiai, skolindavosi knygas iš grafo M. S. Voroncovo asmeninės knygų kolekcijos. Lee buvo kruopštus ir atidus skaitytojas, o jo skaitymas buvo aktyvus, atrankinis ir tikslingas. Jo skaitytų knygų sąraše vyravo 1800–1825 m. išleisti leidiniai. Straipsnyje naudojamas egodokumentinis metodas, siekiant ištirti, kaip Lee tikrino ir įsisavino informaciją, gautą iš istorijos knygų ir dokumentinių kelionių aprašymų, kurie dominavo jo skaitytų leidinių sąraše. Keliaujant šie du žanrai padėjo Lee sėkmingai orientuotis naujoje sociokultūrinėje aplinkoje ir įgyti žinių apie šalis, kuriose jis gyveno ir kurias planavo aplankyti ar kuriose ketino apsistoti ateityje. Straipsnyje taip pat aptariamas XIX a. pradžios britų literatūros poveikis Rusijos imperijos išsilavinusiam elitui, atskleidžiant Walterio Scotto romanų ir George’o Gordono Byrono poezijos populiarumą grafo M. S. Voroncovo aplinkoje ir už jos ribų.
