XII amžiaus „individualumo iškilimo“ sąvoka suteikia vaisingą perspektyvą ankstyvosios mistinės literatūros tyrimams. Nors šiuolaikinė individualumo samprata čia nėra visiškai taikytina, vienuolynų rašytojai vis daugiau dėmesio skyrė „anima“, „seipsum“ ir „homo interior“. Šis vidinis posūkis savastį pavertė dieviškojo susitikimo erdve. Per tokias praktikas kaip kontempliacija, išpažintis ir vizionieriška meditacija „savastis“ tapo tyrimo objektu – vieta, kurioje buvo galima stebėti ir suprasti žmogaus prigimtį, sukurtą pagal Dievo atvaizdą. Misticizmo literatūroje šios patirtys išreiškiamos vaizdingai, naudojant pirmojo asmens pasakojimą, refleksyvius komentarus ir kūrybingus bandymus perteikti tai, kas neapsakoma. Erotiniai ir kūniški vaizdiniai, kuriuos mokslininkai dažnai išskiria, nereiškia nuodėmės, bet tarnauja kaip teologinės įžvalgos priemonė, paverčianti vidinius dvasinius procesus formomis, kurias galima perteikti. Šiame kontekste „savastis“ veikia tiek kaip dieviškoji liudytoja, tiek kaip priemonė, per kurią dieviškumas suvokiamas ir interpretuojamas.
Atsižvelgiant į tai, šią tezę galima išplėtoti, susiejant analizę su egodokumentų tyrimų ir knygų istorijos metodologinėmis priemonėmis. Hildegard von Bingen su savo „Liber Scivias“ (1151/1152) pasirodo ne tik kaip vizionierė, bet ir kaip aktyvi savirefleksyvaus rašymo bei vertimo proceso dalyvė, kuri tiek tekste, tiek vėlesniame knygos gamybos etape atskleidžia individualaus, dvasinio „aš“ pėdsakus. Panašiai ir XIV a. valandų knygų atveju užsakovų nurodymai bei prašymai dėl konkrečių vaizdų leidžia suprasti, kaip jie atskleidžia savo paties ir savo religinės tapatybės pėdsakus.
Rankraštinės knygos kultūra išplečia šią dinamiką: tekstai derinami su vaizdais – diagramomis, simboliniais kūnais ar antropomorfinėmis kosmologijomis, kurios vizualizuoja vidinius procesus. Moterys mistikės plėtojo intymias „Unio Mystica“ su Kristumi formas, dažnai išreiškiamas lytinio akto metaforomis, kurios vėliau paveikė valandų knygas, kuriose Kristaus šoninė žaizda vaizduojama kaip moteriškosios lyties organas. Šie kūriniai atskleidžia kūniškumo, lyties patirties ir individualizuoto dvasingumo integraciją į tekstines ir vizualines medijas, parodydami, kad Viduramžių mistinė ir pamaldumo kultūra rėmėsi sudėtingu savirefleksijos, materialumo ir lyties specifinių religinių praktikų sąveikavimu.
