This issue of the journal Folklore Studies is unique as it is being released as a special edition, a Gedenkschrift dedicated to the Lithuanian paremiologist Kazys Grigas containing articles devoted to the study of small genres of folklore. The idea of compiling such a collection of articles emerged in 2024, during the celebrations marking the centenary of Professor Kazys Grigas’ birth (1924–2002). Grigas’ biography and professional career are, on the one hand, similar to those of many folklorists in countries that fell under Soviet occupation after World War II and regained their independence in 1990s. However, each scholar’s personal history is unique and noteworthy, like a piece of a puzzle that completes the overall picture of the development of folklore studies in the nation. Grigas began his career as a folklorist in the 1950s. He contributed to the work of Lithuanian folklore researchers, who established the theoretical principles of Lithuanian folklore studies, shaped the direction of methodological research and attempted to define the boundaries of folklore genres.
In Lithuania, the centenary of Grigas’ birth was marked by two significant events, as well as various smaller events and publications. The first of these was an international conference entitled Small Genres of Folklore: Local Contexts and Comparative Parallels, held at the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore. This event invited folklorists whose interests and work were directly or indirectly related to Grigas’. Another significant event was the publication of a selection of Grigas’ works, a two-volume set.1 Grigas’ works demonstrate the breadth of his interests and outlook, as well as his attention to even the smallest details of national culture and language. His career as a folklorist began with an interest in the history of folklore studies. Much of Grigas’s work in this field focuses on Simonas Daukantas (1793–1864), a Lithuanian historian, writer and ethnographer who was one of the pioneers of the Lithuanian National Revival in the 19th century and author of the first history of Lithuania written in Lithuanian. Grigas also wrote about other 19th and 20th century culture figures who made significant contributions to Lithuanian folklore. These include Simonas Stanevičius (1848–1826), a Lithuanian poet, folklorist, philologist and historian; Vilius Kalvaitis (1848–1914), a Lithuanian cultural figure from Lithuania Minor who collected folklore and was a publisher; and Viljo Mansikka (1884–1947), a Finnish folklorist who collected incantations in Lithuania and published them in 1929.2 However, both Lithuanian and foreign folklorists know Grigas best as a researcher of proverbs. He spent almost half a century working in this field, leaving behind a wealth of scientific research and popular science publications. Additionally, he is one of the few Lithuanian folklorists of his generation who undertook the task of defining, describing and classifying small genres of folklore. Lithuanian small genres were hardly studied until the mid-20th century, making Grigas’ contributions to this field highly significant.
The current volume continues Grigas’ work, reflecting the diversity of Grigas’ research and interests and examining small genres of folklore from a contemporary perspective.
The classification of genres and the delineation of genre boundaries were central themes in 20th-century folklore studies. Prominent folklore theorists such as Roger D. Abrahams, Robert Austerlitz, Dan Ben-Amos, Linda Dégh and Lauri Honko3 have repeatedly discussed these issues in their work. However, despite this groundwork and the insights of scholars, terms such as ‘small/short genres of folklore’, ‘minor folklore’ and ‘short forms of folklore’ remain vague and imprecise. We acknowledge Honko’s idea that genres are not distinct entities and that establishing a definitive taxonomy is challenging. Folklorists primarily use these terms to manage the diversity of folkloric works and define the boundaries of their field of study. According to Honko, “awareness of genre is thus a secondary phenomenon in culture, and its emergence can best be observed among the tradition specialists, who may put forward metageneric comments applying specifically to genres as genres”.4 When reading the articles in this publication, it is the fluidity of genre boundaries and the obvious inter-genre connections that really catch the eye, both between short folklore genres and between short forms and larger folklore items. In this context, it seems reasonable to view folklore as a unified communication system.5
As in Grigas’ studies, paremiological research predominates in this volume, although a few papers are also dedicated to riddles, charms and beliefs. This reflects the general trend in the study of minor folkloric genres, both in Lithuania and worldwide, of proverbs and riddles, along with narratives and songs, receiving the most attention.
We are very pleased with this collection of articles, as the studies presented in this Gedenkschrift precisely reflect Grigas’ research interests: theoretical issues of paremiology and its historical development; the expression of the folk worldview through folklore; inter-genre connections, and many other topics.
The first section, SMALL GENRES IN THEORY AND PRACTICE, serves as an introduction to the entire volume, with articles devoted to the historiography of folklore, and theoretical issues and their verification in practice. “Small Genres of Folklore in Lithuanian Folkloristics: The Legacy of Kazys Grigas”, by Dalia Zaikauskienė, reveals the place of small genres of folklore within the genre system of Lithuanian folklore, as well as the history of their study. It also addresses the issue of distinguishing between small genres and terminology. The article provides a detailed presentation of Grigas’ paremiological works and his contributions to the study of other small genres.
In her article “Theoretical and Methodological Aspects of the Study of Vernacular Proverbs” Liisa Granbom-Herranen resolves such crucial points as how to define proverbs used in everyday practices, how they are discovered and identified in context and how their meaning changes depending on the circumstances in which they are used. This article is based on proverbs used in everyday Finnish life in the 20th and 21st centuries. The author’s insight, that “proverbs are part of everyday language, tightly bound to socio-cultural context, people, emotions and the situational information” is echoed in other articles of this volume.
Outi Lauhakangas, in her article “Matti Kuusi’s Classification of Proverbs as a Proverbial Worldview”, revisits the Matti Kuusi International type system and database of proverbs, an invaluable resource for paremiologists engaged in comparative studies. This time, Lauhakangas offers an additional approach: she views the catalogue as a “comprehensive mapping of the human life cycle, living conditions and social interactions”, as well as a “general pattern for worldviews”.
Articles in the SMALL GENRES IN LOCAL AND HISTORICAL CONTEXTS section reveal the versatility of paremiological research. In these articles, proverbs emerge as a means of expressing and disseminating significant humanistic ideas, preserving knowledge of traditional culture and facilitating an understanding of human nature and the order of the world.
Wolfgang Mieder has dedicated his research to sayings that are usually overlooked by paremiologists. In his article “Three Proverbial Triads: Sapiential Imperatives for a Peaceful Existence” he provides contextualised references and discusses the origin, history, dissemination and meaning of three American triads in detail: “Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”, “Government of the people, by the people, and for the people”, and “Freedom, justice, and democracy”. A key aspect of the research is the concept of a democratic world based on peaceful, fair and humane coexistence, as expressed by these triads.
The article by Marinela and Rui Soares, “Voices of Wisdom: The Portuguese Example of J. Leite de Vasconcellos” resonates with Grigas’ research on the works of famous Lithuanians who have made significant contributions to their nation’s culture, folklore and identity. By presenting the works of prominent Portuguese cultural figures such as José Leite de Vasconcellos (1858–1941) and Alexandre de Carvalho Costa (1908–1988), the authors of the article demonstrate the importance of their personal contributions to preserving national heritage, as well as revealing aspects of the Portuguese people’s worldview, customs and everyday life through the proverbs they collected.
In her article, “‘The windy day isn’t the day for thatching’: An Irish Proverb and Its Wider Links”, Fionnuala Carson Williams examines a single proverb, revealing aspects of its usage and development, the ethnographic context in which it exists and some of the special regional features of material culture revealed through the proverb. Among other issues, the author shows the inter-genre relations of this proverb and demonstrates which proverbs about procrastination have replaced this once widespread one.
The cultural and social diversity of different societies, as reflected in small genres of folklore, is perfectly illustrated by the research of the four authors in the SMALL GENRES OF FOLKLORE AS REFLECTIONS OF WORLDVIEWS section. In his article “Beyond Entertainment, What Advice and Sociocultural Values do Nzema Riddles Convey?” Mohammed Yakub discusses how the riddles of the Nzema, an ethnic group in West Africa, reveal indigenous knowledge. Drawing on the cultural-linguistics framework, the author uses twenty Nzema folk riddles based on plant and animal life to demonstrate how they convey cultural values and principles of socially acceptable behaviour.
Saša Babič explores how work is understood and depicted through two small folkloric genres: proverbs and riddles. In her article “Work Praises the Master: The Concept of Work in Slovenia” she identifies nine thematic groups that demonstrate the diversity of Slovenian attitudes towards work. This study, which captures diachronic reflections in folklore, emphasises the differences in traditional and modern Slovenian cultural perceptions of work.
In her article, “Uzbek Proverbs Containing Currencies: Diachronic Analysis”, Nargiza Abdullaeva discusses the ancient and contemporary names of currencies that appear in traditional Uzbek proverbs. Drawing on data collected from Uzbek teachers and students (26 proverbs), the study demonstrates the diversity of Uzbek currency names and their roles as culturemes and conceptual metaphors. The use of diachronic analysis is an effective way to shed light on the origins, meanings and uses of traditional Uzbek proverbs, which are a valuable element of ethnic heritage.
In her paper, “The Concepts of Truth and Lie in Lithuanian, Polish and English Proverbs: A Comparative Analysis”, Irena Snukiškienė examines proverbial data using the qualitative methodology of the Lublin School of Ethnolinguistics to extract semantic aspects. A comparison of proverbs from three different languages shows that the conceptualisation of truth and lie is similar across all three languages. Nevertheless, there are some differences, which the author attributes to the historical experiences of Lithuanians and Poles.
The fourth section, INTERACTIONS OF SMALL GENRES WITH OTHER FOLKLORE FORMS, expands on the variety of small folklore genres discussed in this volume. As well as examining proverbs and riddles, it also presents studies of beliefs and charms. This chapter once again demonstrates that folklore genres are not independent entities but are frequently interconnected. Cultural images circulate between these genres as if they were part of a single, unified system of cultural communication.
In her paper “Interdictions in Lithuanian Paremias: Links with Mythological Beliefs” Vita Džekčioriūtė focuses on traditional Lithuanian paremias that express various prohibitions, searching for reflections of the ancient mythical mindset usually associated with beliefs. Here, beliefs are considered a distinct folklore genre with unique characteristics. Due to the similarities in the form and syntax of certain paremias and beliefs, the two can sound the same or very similar. Whether they belong to a particular genre of folklore depends on the context in which they are used.
The article “Proverbs, Charms and Religious Folktales” by Emmanouela Katrinaki and Georgios Tserpes adopts a diachronic perspective. The authors reveal how images from Greek folklore texts, reflecting an old worldview from the first half of the 20th century, have been transformed and transitioned into contemporary short folklore genres that circulate in public digital discourse. The article demonstrates how short folklore texts originating from religious tales, such as proverbs and charms, can be transferred to other folklore genres over time or acquire different meanings and contexts of use.
In her article “Riddles in East Baltic and West Slavic Folktales” Inese Pintāne argues that fairy tales provide an ideal context for gaining a deeper understanding of how riddles emerge, function and acquire meaning. Pintāne examines the functions, structure and procedures of riddling as a narrative device. The key conclusion of the research reveals that there are no big differences in folktale riddles between East Baltic and West Slavic traditions, and that the phenomenon of riddling in folktales is rather rare in these regions.
The REPRESENTATIONS OF SMALL GENRES IN THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD section explores the wide range of ways in which small genres of folklore can be applied in contemporary contexts, how they can be adapted, and the relationship between tradition and innovation.
In her paper “The Contemporary Use of Riddles: Riddles in Fiction and Theatre (Based on the Example of Rimantas Kmita)” Aelita Kensminienė uses a detailed analysis of the work of one Lithuanian writer to reveal the entire spectrum of possible uses of riddles in fiction and theatre. The analysis distinguishes proverb functions and the intention of their application, and presents their possible interpretations.
In their article “On Anti-paremias of the Covid-19 Period in Lithuanian and Latvian”, Evija Liparte and Daiva Zavistanavičienė examine the structural models and semantic categories of a corpus of anti-paremias related to the pandemic. Their study shows that, while there are numerous structural similarities between Latvian and Lithuanian anti-paremias, there are also fundamental differences, particularly in terms of the reasons for creating anti-paremias and the topics they cover.
Hrisztalina Hrisztova-Gotthardt’s article, “A Proverb Revival? On Current Proverb Use in the German-Speaking Part of Switzerland”, concludes the volume by demonstrating the vitality of the proverb genre and its ability to adapt to contemporary contexts. Based on the data collected, the author verifies other researchers’ insights into the evolving reasons for using proverbs. She also highlights the characteristics that determine their survival and even their ‘revival’ in the modern world.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the authors for their invaluable contributions to this volume, including their research, fresh ideas, diligence, patience and understanding. We are also very grateful to the reviewers for their insightful and accurate comments and suggestions which have greatly enhanced the quality of the texts published in this issue. We would like to express our special thanks to our colleagues Lina Būgienė and Radvilė Racėnaitė for their help compiling this Gedenkschrift. Not only did they serve as excellent advisors, they also worked as academic editors during the preparation of the publication. We would also like to express our gratitude to our English language editor, Daniel Edward Allen, whose keen eye and meticulous attention to detail have made the articles in this volume easier to understand and more engaging. We would like to thank Rima Bertašavičiūtė, our Lithuanian language editor, for her work on editing the Lithuanian texts and handling the technical aspects of the articles. We sincerely hope that professor Kazys Grigas would be pleased with the wealth of research on small genres of folklore gathered in one volume, and that he would be proud of his ‘Grigas bees’.
Grigas folkloristo karjerą pradėjo XX a.
Be to, jis, vienas iš nedaugelio savo kartos lietuvių folkloristų, mėgino apibrėžti, aprašyti ir suklasifikuoti trumpuosius folkloro žanrus, kurie Lietuvoje iki pat XX a. vidurio beveik nebuvo tyrinėjami, tad Grigo indėlis į šią sritį labai reikšmingas.
