Silvestras Valiūnas’ “Birutė“ (Ant krašto marės, Palangos miestelėj) is a song of literary origin, popular and sung all over Lithuania.
In 2007, in Trakai, the Polish variant of the song about Birutė was written, which was provided by the Karaim Lidia Mashkevich-Firkovich (Lidija Maškevič-Firkovič). “Birutė“ used to be sung by the grandmother and mother of Lidia Mashkevich-Firkovich, and exactly from the latter the song was learnt. This song would be sung in Polish also by the other Karaim community members in Trakai.
Sung in Polish, “Birutė“ is a rare variant of this song written in Lithuania.
