In the first half of the 20th century, small-town pharmacies performed an important role in the healthcare of the local population. They became an indispensable part of the community life. Pharmacists were not only experts in medicine, but also shining lights in society who contributed to the development of cultural life and promotion of the values of citizenship. In various Lithuanian urban-type settlements, they were establishing departments of public organizations. Pharmacists were also involved in education activity, they were organizing events and festivals, and were also taking care of the image of the small town they were living in. The article reveals the circumstances under which pharmacies were being established in Lithuania and discusses the impact of the pharmacists on the local residents. By considering the specific case of pharmacist Juozas Piekarskis into the cultural life of the small town of Nevarėnai, the article undertakes to discover the impact of a single personality on the development of the entire minor town.
