First Statute of Lithuania and the Epoch

This volume is based on papers presented at an international scholarly conference held to commemorate the 475th anniversary of the First Statute of Lithuania. The geographical diversity of the participants, as well as the chronological scope and thematic breadth of their presentations, demonstrated that the First Statute of Lithuania is of great significance not only for research into Lithuanian statehood and social history, but also for that of other European countries. The volume highlights three main issues. Several articles examine the importance of the First Statute of Lithuania and its role in the life of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The majority of the contributions analyse the Statute as a legal monument and a source of law, addressing various problems related to the genesis and development of legal culture in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In addition, the volume offers a more in-depth analysis of certain aspects of the social, economic, and cultural development of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
