Abstract

The books and certificate documents reflect the life of society, summarizing in a very brief way the vicissitudes of human existence. They are a source of genealogic and personal data, like first names and family names, and they testify to the nation’s life, traditions, health, migrations, changes in the society and relationships with its neighbours. Between the 19th and the 20th century, and especially in the period between wars, it is possible to observe a very interesting phenomenon in the Karaim society which on the one hand started to be open to the outside world, and on the other was still bound to traditions, culture and national autonomy.
In this work, we show Karaims’ anthroponimical materials. Our focus was on first names and family names, which identify people. We included their origin, alterations in their orthography, vocalization and pronunciation.
