Recently, the direction of animal welfare protection has been consistently emerging in European supranational and national law of various countries. Along with the development of animal welfare law and public morality, new types of legal problems arise together with the formation of judicial doctrine that resolves them. One of the most relevant examples of the intersection of human rights and animal welfare protection is ritual slaughter. The article examines the genesis of animal welfare in European law and evaluates the trends in the jurisprudence of the CJEU and the ECtHR related to the freedom of religion and animal welfare at slaughter. The analysis of the case-law will allow to draw a conclusion about the supranational judicial dialogue, the result of which is a general consensus that the protection of animal welfare at slaughter is a legitimate basis on which religious rites may be restricted.
